How To Verify A Shopify Store: Due Diligence Guide For Buyers

Listen to Article
0:00/0:00

Buying an established Shopify store is one of the fastest ways to move straight into a cash flow generating business. However, the rise in demand for existing e-commerce businesses has given way to a sophisticated breed of scammers who can make a non-existent business look real.

From photo-shopped revenue screenshots to bot-driven traffic, they have mastered the art of deception targeting first-time buyers. If you are browsing marketplaces like Flippa, Empire Flippers, or private Facebook groups, you need to conduct a rigorous verification framework to ensure the business you’re buying exists in the first place.

In this guide, we will break down exactly how to verify a Shopify store to ensure it’s a real online business before you commit to it.

1. Verify Financials: Moving Beyond Screenshots

At TrendHijacking, we’ve been in the industry for over 7 years now. And we always tell the buyers who work with us this: The first rule of acquisition is to Never trust a screenshot. Screenshots are the easiest things to manipulate with "Inspect Element" or basic Photoshop skills.

And still at it, we also advice you not to settle for PDF reports only. A better way to verify financials is to request view-only Shopify access.

This grants you access to the Shopify store dashboard, where you should be able to cross-reference the following crucial financials of any ecommerce business:

  • Total Sales vs. Net Profit: A store doing $50,000/month in revenue means nothing if the ad spend is $48,000. Look at the "Profit" reports if the seller uses Shopify’s cost-per-item feature.

  • Refund Rates: Check the "Orders" section. High refund rates (anything over 5-10%) usually indicate poor product quality or massive shipping delays, which will kill the business long-term.

  • Chargeback History: Check the payments settings. Frequent chargebacks can lead to Shopify Payments or Stripe banning the account, rendering the store useless.

IMPORTANT: A legitimate seller should be able to show you bank statements or a P&L (Profit and Loss) statement that matches the payouts shown in the Shopify dashboard.

If the Shopify "Payouts" tab says $10,000 was sent on the 15th, there should be a corresponding $10,000 deposit in their business bank account.

2. Audit the Traffic: Real Humans vs. Bot Farms

High traffic looks great on a graph, but if that traffic doesn't convert or comes from "click farms," you will end up inheriting a worthless Shopify store.

The best way to audit and understand the traffic of any e-commerce store is to go through Google analytics data. Ask the seller to give you "Viewer" access to their Google Analytics.

Once inside, you should look for these red flags:

  • Traffic Sources: If 90% of the traffic is "Direct," and there’s no strong brand presence (social media following), that traffic is likely faked.

  • Bounce Rate & Session Duration: If you notice that thousands of people visit the store but leave in under 3 seconds, those aren't real customers.

  • Acquisition Channels: A healthy business should have a mix of Organic Search, Social, and Paid traffic sources. If the store has 100% paid traffic, then you should understand that the business dies the moment you stop spending on ads.

If the seller claims a massive Instagram or TikTok following drives their sales, be sure to audit those accounts as well. Tools like HypeAuditor or Modash can help you check for fake followers.

3. Operations and Supplier Due Diligence

When it comes to buying a Shopify business, you aren't just buying a website but a supply chain. If the supply chain breaks, the business vanishes.

That said, you need to understand how the business operates. Is the store dropshipping from AliExpress, or do they have a private label contract?

Request the seller for the recent invoices from their suppliers. This confirms the "Cost of Goods Sold" (COGS) provided in their P&L is accurate.

Next, you should check the "Shipping" settings and actual tracking numbers from the last 30 days.

If customers are waiting 4 weeks for a package, your "New Owner" honeymoon phase will be spent dealing with angry emails and PayPal disputes.

Above all, you should verify that the store owns the rights to what they are selling. Check the USPTO (or relevant local database) for the brand name.

Also, check the image rights. Scammers often steal professional product photos from Amazon or big brands. Use a Reverse Image Search on the store’s main product photos. If they appear on 50 other sites, the "unique brand" is likely a carbon copy.

4. The Technical Health Check

A "clean" looking site can have a messy backend that will cost you thousands in developer fees to fix.

To avoid this, you need to conduct a technical health audit of the Shopify website.

Check the Shopify App Store integrations. Some stores rely on expensive monthly apps ($200+/mo) that eat into your margins. Ensure these apps are transferable.

Next, conduct a domain ownership search. Use a WHOIS lookup to see how long the domain has been active. A "6-figure store" that has only had its domain for 3 months is a massive red flag.

You also want to ensure the Shopify theme is legally purchased. If it's a pirated "nulled" theme, Shopify can take your site down without warning.

5. Identifying The "Pump and Dump" Signs

Scammers often "pump" a store by running break-even or loss-leader ads for 60 days to show massive growth, then sell it based on those 60 days of "projected" yearly revenue.

Look at the 12-month trend. If the store had $0 in sales for 10 months and suddenly spiked to $30k/month right before the listing went live, the seller is likely exit-scamming.

Real businesses have seasonal ebbs and flows, not overnight vertical spikes without a massive, explainable marketing event.

Why Doing This Alone is High Risk

The checklist above covers the basics, but professional scammers know how to hide their tracks. They can fake GA4 data, manipulate invoices, and provide "references" that are just accomplices.

For most buyers, spending $20,000 to $100,000+ to acquire a business is a significant investment.

Just the same way you wouldn't buy a house without a professional inspector, you shouldn't buy a Shopify store without a professional acquisition team.
